Fractured, in Red No. 3

2022 / Part of Fragments Series

Acrylic, oil paper on conservation board

71.3 cm x 59.4 cm / ~ 28 x 23 in

Covering up one fracture exposes another. Some are hairline thin, some are glaring. Some fragments are missing. The process of piecing together a whole. What gets exposed is out of our control. Futility of the desire to mend all; pieces through your fingers like sand. However the fragments are rearranged, takes just one out of place to reverberate through the whole.

The Fragments Series is reflecting on the challenges of dealing with mental health issues through a subtle abstract expression of forms and colours detaching, shifting, overlapping, and reconnecting. It encapsulates where I am and what I want to say with my practice right now. It also highlights a less explored side of what collage can be and how the paper medium can be used.

The artwork is sold unframed, however it is advisable to frame the artwork. You can choose a framed option at checkout. If you prefer to frame yourself, oak frames for compositions with lighter colours, and walnut/mahogany frames for darker tones are recommended. A 10 to 13 mm (0.4 to 0.51 in) frame width would highlight the delicate nature of the work.

To preserve the original colours and textures of the work it is recommended to use glass for protection, with anti-reflective options like Artglass or similar being advised by the artist.

Alternatively displaying the artwork without protection can highlight natural qualities of paper and the process of ageing, which can be beautiful in itself and a call to let nature take its course, exploring the permanence of idea vs. expression medium. If you choose to display the work without glass protection take extra care not to damage the surface when cleaning, and where possible keeping away from moisture, heating, and direct sunlight. A tray frame to display the artwork without glass is recommended by the artist.
